“All that counts can’t be counted.” THE POWER OF MINDBODYSPIRIT MEDICINE
There are many powerful forces within you and available to you, that can profoundly affect your health. They cannot be measured in a test tube or seen on a CAT scan, but they are there and they are immensely powerful. They include love, faith, prayer, your beliefs, family and social support. Scientific research has validated these and many more self-care techniques which are readily available to all of us. They can dramatically affect our quality of life and our health, our recovery from serious illness, and can even help us to heal into death. Every thought that you think, everything you do causes a chemical reaction in your body. Your body, mind and spirit are intimately connected. Anything which affects or changes one aspect affects the whole.
What is Holistic Nursing and MindBodySpirit Medicine? Holistic Nursing involves caring for the person as a whole, caring for BodyMindSpirit. All interventions take into account all of these aspects. Mind-Body medicine is a scientifically validated aspect of medical care. For over 35 years, laboratories at Harvard Medical School and many other reputable scientific communities have systematically studied mind-body interactions. Mind-Body Medicine is derived from a variety of disciplines (physiology, immunology, psychology, neuroscience) that increasingly provide the scientific foundation for these interventions. Research and clinical practice have shown the effectiveness of the mind-body-spirit approach in treating patients with a wide variety of stress-related symptoms and illnesses. The foundation of Holistic Nursing and MindBodySpirit Medicine is the belief that the body can heal itself. Holistic interventions create a supportive environment in which the body can have the opportunity to heal. Every person has a different unique imprint for healing. Every person has innate wisdom about their illness and what they need to heal. Holistic medicine respects this and works with each client to tap into their own inner wisdom. In Holistic Nursing and MindBodySpirit Medicine there is a core belief that healing is always possible (even though there are instances of where curing or elimination of physical symptoms is not possible.) There are always ways to alleviate distress and suffering. Illness, crisis and loss are seen as a journey from which growth and transformation are always possible. Holistic treatment begins with self-awareness, self-care and self-responsibility. It brings together the best of modern western medicine with the best holistic interventions for each individual client. The foundation of Holistic Nursing and Medicine rests on the creation of a Healing Partnership. Clients are considered to be equals and partners in the healing process. This is a relationship of equals, working together to enhance the healing process. Holistic Nursing is a client-centered practice. An essential component is the creation of a confidential environment where the client feels safe, protected and supported.
